CA Cannabis License Guidelines

California Cultivation License

  • Type 1A – Cultivation: Specialty indoor (small): for indoor cultivation using exclusively artificial lighting, with a maximum threshold to be determined by the licensing authority.
  • Type 1B – Cultivation: Specialty mixed-light (small): for cultivation using a combination of natural and supplemental artificial lighting.
  • Type 1C – cultivation: Specialty cottage (small): for cultivation using a combination of natural and supplemental artificial lighting at a maximum threshold to be determined by the licensing authority. This means 2,500 square feet or less of total canopy size for mixed-light cultivation and, or up to 25 mature plants for outdoor cultivation, or 500 square feet or less of full canopy size for indoor cultivation, on one premise.
  • Type 2 – Cultivation: Outdoor (small): outdoor cultivation using no artificial lighting between 5,001 and 10,000 square feet, including total canopy size on one premise.
  • Type 2A – Cultivation: Indoor (small): indoor cultivation using exclusively artificial lighting between 5,001 and 10,000 square feet, including total canopy size on one premise.
  • Type 2B – Cultivation: Mixed-light (small): CA growers license for cultivation using a combination of natural and supplemental artificial lighting at a maximum threshold to be determined by the licensing authority, between 5,001 and 10,000 square feet, inclusive, of total canopy size on one premise.
  • Type 3 – Cultivation: Outdoor (medium): outdoor cultivation using no artificial lighting from 10,001 square feet to one acre, including total canopy size on one premise. The Department of Food and Agriculture shall limit the number of licenses allowed of this type.
  • Type 3A – Cultivation: Indoor (medium): indoor cultivation using exclusively artificial lighting between 10,001 and 22,000 square feet, including total canopy size on one premise. The Department of Food and Agriculture shall limit the number of licenses allowed of this type.
  • Type 3B – Cultivation: Mixed-light (medium): for cultivation using a combination of natural and supplemental artificial lighting at a maximum threshold to be determined by the licensing authority, between 10,001 and 22,000 square feet, inclusive of total canopy size on one premise. The Department of Food and Agriculture shall limit the number of licenses allowed of this type.
  • Type 4 – Nursery: for the cultivation of cannabis solely as a nursery.
  • Type 5 – Cultivation: Outdoor (large): outdoor cultivation using no artificial lighting greater than one acre, including total canopy size on one premise.
  • Type 5A – Cultivation: Indoor (large): CA growers license for indoor cultivation using exclusively artificial lighting greater than 22,000 square feet, inclusive of total canopy size on one premise.
  • Type 5B – Cultivation: Mixed-light (large): for cultivation using a combination of natural and supplemental artificial lighting at a maximum threshold to be determined by the licensing authority, more significant than 22,000 square feet, inclusive of total canopy size on one premise.

California Manufacturing License

  • Type 6 – Manufacturing Level 1: is for sites that manufacture cannabis products using nonvolatile solvents or no solvent.
  • Type 7 – Manufacturing Level 2: is for sites that manufacture cannabis products using volatile solvents.
  • Type 8 Testing Laboratory: is for any facility offering or performing tests on cannabis products.

California Licenses for Retail, Dispensary, Distribution

  • Type 8 Testing Laboratory: for a facility that offers or performs tests on cannabis products.
  • Type 10 – Retailer: for the retail sale and delivery of cannabis products to customers. This means a retailer shall possess licensed premises, a physical location from which commercial cannabis activities will be conducted.
  • Type 11 – Distributor: a distributor license shall be bonded and insured at a minimum level established by the licensing authority.
  • Type 12 – Microbusiness: is for the cultivation of cannabis on an area less than 10,000 square feet and to act as a licensed distributor, level 1 manufacturer, and retailer under this division.
